Theogamia

Theogamia - February 9, 2021 6:55 PM / Jessie

Theogamia is the celebration of the marriage of Zeus and Hera. Specifically, the festival honors Zeus Teleios and Hera Teleia (epithets that indicate both are married). Unfortunately, not much is known about how the Ancient Greeks celebrated Theogamia.

The beauty of that however is that it gives us plenty of wiggle room to get creative! Though to be honest as a revivalist I get creative with everything as you will see throughout the year!

So how do we celebrate Theogamia as a modern Hellenic Polytheist?? One way is to approach it similarly to Valentine’s Day. Have it be a celebration of relationships and bonds you have formed, especially if you happen to be married. Honor the union you have established and give thanks to Zeus and Hera for being the patrons of marriage.

Another way is to make the day all about Zeus and Hera. This is what I am choosing to do, treating it as a wedding anniversary for the divine couple! I will be making heart shaped honey cakes, preparing a lovely meal, and taking the time to reflect on Zeus and Hera’s marriage. I have been thinking a lot about Zeus and Hera recently so what better time then Theogamia to jot down all my thoughts in my devotional journal!

Let me know how you’re planning to celebrate!
